Anthems for Justice

Justice Adda’s ‘Anthems for Justice’ (AfJ) project has been conceptualized to explore and develop a demonstrable link between music/art and justice, and to showcase this link in the form of academic writings, teaching workshops, podcasts, musical compositions etc. The goal of AfJ is to make justice and the law in India more accessible to citizens, using music/art as tools for change. Music, and art in general, in this respect, is a powerful tool because it combines emotional resonance with a unifying message, inspiring solidarity and collective action.

Under the larger ‘Anthems for Justice’ umbrella, we have conceptualized and initiated several sub-projects to explore the strong connections between law and music/art. One, to develop music anthems to highlight the struggles and triumphs of marginalized communities, raising awareness and inspiring action. Second, to offer deeper perspectives on the subject, we created an Anthems for Justice blog-series. There is a dire need for stories about Indian art and culture to be told and re-told, especially to the present and coming generations. Through these blog-posts we aim to bring to notice the importance of these artforms, as well as the need for their revival and preservation. Ultimately, we discuss how remarkably art and music can be used as strong and impactful tools towards advocacy and creating awareness about various social justice issues. Third, we wish to explore creating interesting and engaging content to simplify complicated legal issues on intellectual property rights (including copyright, trademark) and contracts relating to music/ art, for consumption by artists and a larger audience.

We received a grant from the India Foundation for the Arts under their Arts Platform program to develop a Podcast Series to explore the relationship between copyright law and art. We have named this podcast series 'The Art Block'. As part of this Podcast Series we will be speaking with lawyers and artists from across various fields of art like music, photography, film-making and illustration. We will discuss questions pertaining to the effects of copyright law on art and artists creating original work, as well as speak with lawyers specialising in this kind of law, on their take on the subject.

Transform Rural India

We are working in collaboration with TRI to develop three projects, namely:

  • 'Mandali' , a songwriting project on gender justice in Madhya Pradesh;

  • 'Maach', a theatre project on gender justice in Madhya Pradesh;

  • 'Maanvikalaya': an audio library project with women in Madhya Pradesh

The goal behind this project with TRI is to demonstrate the strong link between law, justice and art and how different forms of art like music and theatre can potentially effect positive change at both individual as well as societal levels.
